DIY Hat Accent Wall, or, Use What You Have

So here's what our master bedroom was looking like:

Honestly, it is currently my least favorite room in the house. Besides the fact that it is in desperate need of a coat of paint and some new window treatments, it is decidedly lacking in decor. I don't have a ton of extra money lying around with a new baby, plus I don't want to go out and buy a bunch of decor from Target just to fill space. I want the things in our room to reflect who we are as a couple (We absolutely love this Society6 print!).

This wall in particular, between our bed and our bathroom, was crying for attention. Enter hats, stage right.

Over the years, it has somehow become a tradition for my sister to gift me a hat every Christmas. I absolutely love it. Unfortunately, all of these beautiful hats were stuffed in a box in my closet. Add to that the fact that David's couple of frequently used baseball caps didn't really have a home, and I thought I might have an art display on my hands.

I laid the hats out on our bed in a way I liked, taking into consideration the sizes and colors. As I hung them on the wall, I rearranged and adjusted until I liked what I had. The four wide-brimmed hats are interspersed evenly with the five baseball caps, with the berets and cloche topping off the display. I just kept readjusting the nails until they were all hung evenly. There are a lot more nail holes behind those hats than there are nails in the wall! Once we paint, it will be easy to spackle over any mistakes I made.

I love this easy and free way to add art to a wall. It also adds a ton of dimension that I wouldn't get from a piece of two dimensional art. Not only does it look really good and amp up our bedroom decor, it is personal and keeps these beautiful hats out of a box in the closet. Plus having them out helps me to remember to wear them! Hats off to me!
