German Smear Inspiration

I'm a brick purist. Painting brick is a huge trend right now, and I cringe every time I see someone do it. I have a horrifying nagging feeling that eventually the interior designers of the world are going to paint over ALL the brick, and there won't be any original brick left! Unfortunately for me, the only brick in my entire house looks like this:

Despite the orangey, maroony ugliness of it, I can't bring myself to paint it. Enter the German smear technique (pronounced New York bagel style - shmear!). It's a DIY project involving spreading mortar over the face of the brick, keeping it looking really traditional and brick-like, but eliminating the bad color. I think it will help add some more character, while keeping the intention of the brick.

Check out all these fabulous inspiration pics from around the web. This is the look we will be aiming for!

This one's in a master bedroom, but it's the same idea.

So pretty right?! We also plan to paint the wall behind the fireplace an accent color (maybe blue?), and add a wood accent pattern from the top of the fireplace all the way to the ceiling behind the TV.

I can't wait to tackle the next project! Down the road, we also have plans to lay antique brick flooring in the laundry room, so it should tie together nicely. Until we get started, I'll be dreaming about the inspiration pictures!
